Description

La zone soudano-sahélienne du Cameroun qui couvre les régions administratives de l’Extrême-Nord et du Nord est de loin la plus touchée par la désertification, la dégradation des terres et la sécheresse (DDTS). La précarité croissante du capital naturel de cette entité pédoclimatique interpelle davantage l’action publique, compte tenu des conséquences sur les populations (baisses des rendements agricoles et diminution des revenus monétaires et paupérisation croissante…). Le Gouvernement du Cameroun a pris la pleine mesure de la situation à travers des réformes de stratégies, des politiques de développement, du cadre juridique et réglementaire et des institutions depuis la fin des années 1980, marquant ainsi son engagement et son profond attachement pour la lutte contre la DDTS. D’un point de vue opérationnel, le Gouvernement du Cameroun a pendant les années 1970/80 initié et mis en œuvre un vaste programme de reboisement dénommé « Opération Sahel vert », le but étant de maitriser l’avancée du désert, de sensibiliser et d’éduquer les populations à des gestes citoyens de préservation environnementale. Sa mise en œuvre a cependant souffert des conséquences de la crise économique qu’a connue le pays à partir de 1987. Cette opération a été relancée dans la région de l’Extrême-Nord en 2008 par le Ministère de l’Environnement et de la Protection de la Nature (MINEP) à travers des activités de reboisement financées par le budget d’investissement public de l’Etat du Cameroun (BIP). Cette relance s’inscrivait dans la mise en application du PAN/LCD (2006) dans le cadre du respect de l’engagement du Cameroun vis-à-vis de la Convention des Nations Unies sur la lutte contre la désertification. C’est dans ce cadre que depuis 2008, un travail d’identification des espèces végétales et animales sur les sites de reboisement gérés par le ministère en charge de l’environnement et ses partenaires a été fait. Ce jeu de données présente la liste de quelques occurrences d’espèces observées sur ces sites. Il faut noter ici que certaines espèces ont été introduite dans le cadre du projet et d’autres ont réapparue à la faveur de la densification végétale de ces sites.The Sudano-Sahelian zone of Cameroon, which covers the administrative regions of the Far North and the North, is by far the most affected by desertification, land degradation and drought (DLDD). The increasing precariousness of the natural capital of this pedoclimatic entity calls for more public action, given the consequences on the populations (decrease in agricultural yields and cash income and increasing impoverishment...). The Government of Cameroon has taken the full measure of the situation through reforms of strategies, development policies, legal and regulatory framework and institutions since the late 1980s, thus marking its commitment and deep attachment to the fight against DLDD. From an operational point of view, the Government of Cameroon initiated and implemented a vast reforestation program called "Operation Green Sahel" in the 1970s and 1980s, with the goal of controlling the advancing desert and educating the population on environmental conservation. However, its implementation suffered from the consequences of the economic crisis that the country experienced from 1987 onwards. This operation was relaunched in the Far North region in 2008 by the Ministry of the Environment and Nature Protection (MINEP) through reforestation activities financed by the Cameroon State Public Investment Budget (BIP). This revival was part of the implementation of the PAN/LCD (2006) in the framework of Cameroon's commitment to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification. It is within this framework that since 2008, a work of identification of plant and animal species on reforestation sites managed by the Ministry in charge of the environment and its partners has been done. This dataset presents the list of some species occurrences observed on these sites. It should be noted here that some species were introduced within the framework of the project and others have reappeared as a result of the densification of vegetation on these sites.

Ce jeu de données présente la liste de quelques occurrences d’espèces animales et végétales observées sur les sites de conservation ou de restauration des terres dans la région de l’Extrême-Nord du Cameroun. Ces site font partie des zones délimitées par le ministère en charge de l’environnement dans le cadre de son projet « Sahel Vert ». certaines données proviennent également des sites mis sur pied par les partenaires de ce ministère.

Project Data

This project aims to strengthen the collaboration between GBIF Cameroon, GBIF Benin and GBIF France through the CESP programme. This collaboration will enable GBIF Cameroon to receive guidance and technical assistance from GBIF France and GBIF Benin. The project will increase sharing of experiences between the three nodes, as well as between the former beneficiaries of BID funding. It will also allow the promotion of GBIF through training workshops and the conception, production and dissemination of support materials during the workshop.

Study Area Description This dataset lists some of the occurrences of animal and plant species observed on conservation or land restoration sites in the Far North region of Cameroon. These sites are part of the areas delineated by the Ministry in charge of the Environment as part of its "Green Sahel" project. Some data are also from sites set up by partners of this Ministry.
